and the Flemish Region
Three meanings of the surname Hurst are:
- English: topographic name for someone who lived on a wooded hill, Old English hyrst, or habitational name from one of the various places named with this word, for example Hurst in Berkshire, Kent, Somerset, and Warwickshire, or Hirst in Northumberland and West Yorkshire.
- Irish: re-Anglicized form of de Horsaigh, Gaelicized form of the English habitational name Horsey, established in Ireland since the 13th century.
- German: topographic name from Middle High German hurst 'woodland', 'thicket'.
A century-old theory is that the Hursts were descended from an English Henry Hurst of a particular line from Leckhampstead, England. According to the Hurst DNA Project (www.familytreedna.com), at present, there is little empirical evidence to connect many American Hursts to the Hursts of Leckhampstead, England. In fact, there is little information to link the Hurst family of South Carolina to other American Hursts, including those from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
